Het werk van Neil Mendoza combineert beeldhouwkunst, elektronica en software om leven te brengen in levenloze objecten en ruimtes. Door gevonden voorwerpen op onverwachte manieren te combineren met technologie, kunnen de verschillende elementen van zijn werk vanuit een nieuw perspectief worden bekeken. Hij verkent thema's als het absurde, het humoristische, het zinloze en het surrealistische. Hij heeft zijn werk tentoongesteld en gesproken op conferenties over de hele wereld, gaf lessen over kunst en technologie aan UCLA en Stanford, en mede-oprichter van het kunstcollectief "is this good?".
Tijdens de Nacht van Ontdekkingen kun je de Spambots van Neil Mendoza bewonderen in de Oude Sterrewacht. Elke Spambot heeft een klein toetsenbord met vier letters erop. Door samen te werken kunnen ze het hele alfabet typen en dankzij AI en het inzetten van machine learning kunnen deze robotachtige Spam-blikjes hun verhalen vertellen.

Neil Mendoza’s work combines sculpture, electronics and software to bring inanimate objects and spaces to life. By combining found objects with technology in unexpected ways, the different elements of his work can be looked at from a new perspective. He explores themes of the absurd, the humorous, the futile and the surreal. He has exhibited work and talked at conferences around the world, taught classes on art and technology at UCLA and Stanford and co-founded the art collective “is this good?”.
During the Night of Discoveries, you can see Neil Mendoza's Spambots at the Old Observatory. Each Spambot has a small keyboard with four letters on it. By collaborating, they can type the entire alphabet, and thanks to AI and the application of machine learning, these robot-like Spam cans can tell their stories.
