Er zijn verschillende manieren waarop wezens interpersoonlijke afstand waarnemen en de acties die ze hierop ondernemen. Persoonlijke afstand structureert onbewust de micro-ruimte en is nauw verwant aan het principe van territorialiteit als overlevingsmechanisme. Proxemica onderzoekt de gedragspatronen die worden vastgesteld en behouden door de mate van nabijheid tijdens een interactie.
Proxemica nodigt je uit om de rol van persoonlijke ruimte te verkennen via een interactieve installatie. Het simuleert gedragspatronen via 243 LEDs. De LEDs zijn geplaatst in een houten frame afgewerkt met een glazen blad. Hoewel het wezen is gebouwd met minimale technische middelen, vangt het wel de ervaring van inbreuk op interpersoonlijke ruimte. Dit werk maakt deel uit van de cursus Kunstmatige Wezens in het Media Technology programma aan de Universiteit Leiden.

There are different ways that members of a species perceive interpersonal distance and the course of action they take on it. Personal distance unconsciously structures micro-space and is closely related to the principle of territoriality as a survival mechanism. Proxemics explores the behavioural patterns established and maintained by the degree of closeness during an interaction.
Proximics invites you to explore the role of personal space via an interactive installation. It simulates behavioural patterns via 243 LEDs. The LEDs were placed in a wooden frame finished with a glass top. Although the creature is built with minimal technical resources, it does capture the experience of invasion of interpersonal space. This work is part of the Artificial Creatures course in the Media Technology programme at Leiden University.
