‘The End of Individuals’ is een werk op het snijvlak van kunst en kunstmatige intelligentie. Het is een taalexperiment dat onderzoekt in hoeverre mens en machine in staat zijn om teksten te ‘ontkennen’ (een vrije vertaling van het Engelse woord negation: in negatie / negatieve vorm / tegenovergestelde betekenis zetten). Door gebruik te maken van Natural Language Processing en Large Language Models analyseert de software teksten, maakt er een ‘negatie’ van en zoekt de grens op van het begrip dat machines hebben van onze menselijke taal.
Negation-algorithms vormen op dit moment de voorhoede binnen AI-uitdagingen. Maar het begrijpen van negatie is ook van belang voor onszelf. ‘Ontkenning’ of ‘negatie’ is een fundamenteel element van de menselijke taal. Het is essentieel voor logisch denken, stelt ons in staat om te evalueren of een uitspraak waar of onwaar is (of ambigu of ironisch) en het geeft ons een manier om abstracte en complexe concepten uit te drukken, zoals non existentie, oneindigheid of niets.
Negatie is ook een creatief proces. Mensen zijn niet alleen betekenis-machines, maar ook negatie-machines. Met dit project wil de kunstenaar ‘computationele taalkunde’ op een andere manier benaderen die nieuwe inzichten kan geven in AI-begrip van menselijke taal en menselijk begrip van zichzelf en AI.
Het werk verkent tevens de donkere kant van AI - hoe kan een machine ontkennen en negatieve relaties verbeelden door middel van visualisaties? Hoe leert een AI liegen en hoe ontstaat er een nieuw model dat creatiever "denken"; mogelijk maakt?
Voor ‘The End of Individuals’ koos Katarina ervoor om een negatie te maken van het boek "On the Origin of Species"; door Charles Darwin, gepubliceerd in 1859. Dit baanbrekende werk vestigde de evolutietheorie die werkt door natuurlijke selectie, willekeurige variatie (mutatie) en aanpassing aan de omgeving (struggle for life). Weergegeven als een vertakkend patroon, bewijst de evolutietheorie hoe elke soort afstamt van een gemeenschappelijke voorouder, met als conclusie dat er één gemeenschappelijke voorouder is van alle levensvormen en de uiteindelijke oorsprong of "eenvoudig een begin".

Katarina Petrović is een kunstenaar en onderzoeker die werkt op het snijvlak van kunst, wetenschap en technologie. Ze richt zich op generatieve processen en creatie in taal en natuur en maakt modulaire installaties die gebruik maken van media zoals generatieve teksten, poëzie, geluid en software. Katarina werkt als gastdocent aan de ArtScience Interfaculty in Den Haag, is geaffilieerd onderzoeker aan het transdisciplinaire onderzoekscentrum Leo Apostel in Brussel en lid en voorzitter van de artist-run space Trixie in Den Haag.
The End of Individuals is a work at the intersection of art and artificial intelligence. It is an experiment in language that explores machine and human capacities to negate (translate text into a negative). By using Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models, the software analyses and negates texts, testing the limit of machine's understanding.
Negation algorithms are at the forefront of AI challenges today. Understanding negation is not only important for the development of language AI, but for humans as well. Negation is a fundamental element of human language—it is essential to logical systems, allows us to evaluate whether a statement is true or false, ambiguous or ironic, and it gives us a way to express abstract and complex concepts such as nonexistence, infinity or nothing. To negate is also to be creative. We are not only meaning machines, but negation machines as well. This project aims to draft a different approach to linguistic computations, which can open new paths to AI understanding of human language and human understanding of oneself and AI. It explores the dark side of AI - how can a machine negate and imagine negative relations through visualisations? How does an AI learn to lie, oppose and how does a new model emerge that would allow for more creative ‘thinking’?
For The End of Individuals Katarina chose to negate the book ‘On the Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, published in 1859. This seminal work established the theory of evolution that works by natural selection, random variation (mutation) and adaptation to the environment (struggle for life). Represented as a branching pattern, evolutionary theory proves how each variety of species descends from a common ancestor, concluding that there is a single, common ancestor of all life forms and the ultimate origin or “simple a beginning”.

By focusing on generative processes in language and nature, she makes iterative and modular works in online and offline space, using media such as generative text, poetry, sound and software. Katarina works as a guest lecturer at ArtScience Interfaculty in The Hague, is an affiliated researcher at trans-disciplinary research Centre Leo Apostel in Brussels and a member and chair of the artist-run space Trixie The Hague.
